Project Background

Birds of Novasola is a personal exercise in worldbuilding and speculative evolution, through the lens of ornithology by way of drawing and creative writing. Novasola is a fictional island I designed which I will populate with drawings of fictional, speculative bird species along with written information and notes.

My goal is to build an entire field guide of fictional birds for the island, along the way creating a flushed-out and realistic natural history. Each post will feature an original illustration of a bird, map, etc. along with "in-universe" writings in the form of field guide descriptions, natural histories, personal writings like letters and journal entries, and educational outreach material. On field guide entries the format will be an illustration, followed by more technical descriptions, followed then by more creative writings.

I will continue to post new entries on this site as I find time to complete them.

Though this project is just for fun, I take the utmost care into ensuring everything produced for this project, despite being fiction, is realistic and holds up to detailed scrutiny. I thoroughly research a topic (like bird taxonomy, biology, geology, history, etc.) before writing or illustrating anything regarding said topic. That said, should anything I post seem especially interesting to you, there is a Wikipedia search bar, for you to do your own research, on this site's Sidebar.

See the About the Creator section for more information about the greater vision and inspirations for this project, and the List of Entries for a simple list of every post.

Use the headers and sidebars to navigate the site. Use labels to limit posts by type. Labels like (field guide) and (ID) apply to bird illustrations, while labels like (maps) or (natural history) apply to posts regarding background info. The Post Archive lists every post by date. The Wikipedia bar is for searching topics or species that might interest you.
